McDonald’s flagship store: An example of newly renovated space

The advance of technology has transformed the way how restaurants and hotels operate the business. When almost everything, from reservations, productions, and service delivery, to the collection of payments, can all be performed by machines, restaurants and hotels must also reconsider how they may better utilize the space for smooth operations.

McDonald’s opened a new restaurant that looks like an Apple Store

McDonald’s, for example, revealed a flagship store that looks like an Apple Store in Chicago, roughly two months after the company opened a brand new $250 million headquarter in the Windy City’s up-and-coming neighborhood known for its trendy restaurants,. McDonald’s flagship store has a series of new designs, including:
  • The restaurant is located in a glassy, 19,000-square-foot building.
  • More open space is featured for self-order kiosks, mobile order and pay, delivery, and even table service, the services that become increasingly important across the U.S. locations.
  • Table service is offered with digital ordering options. Currently, about 5,000 locations in the U.S. fit the qualifications for such table service.
  • The restaurant highlights the sustainability efforts taken by the company, featuring over 70 trees at the restaurant’s ground floor and on-site solar panels.

McDonald’s nationwide restaurant makeovers

Along with the new flagship store, McDonald’s announced its plan to spend $6 billion on nationwide restaurant makeovers. This project, which is expected to complete by 2020, will transform most of the company’s restaurants through construction and modernization. The newly renovated restaurants will feature:
  • Refreshed exterior designs
  • Modernized dining room with new furniture and globally or locally inspired décors.
  • Digital self-order kiosks
  • Remodeled counters for table service
  • Digital menu boards inside the restaurant and at the drive through
  • Designated parking sports for curbside pick-up through mobile order and pay
  • Expanded McCafé counters and larger display cases

Additionally, McDonald’s has introduced McDelivery with Uber Eats at over 5,000 U.S. restaurants to embrace the food delivery trend.

Even though some critiques believe McDonald’s initiatives of making over its stores are only playing catch-up, I believe such changes are critical for the company to update its image. Plus, it is time for restaurants to reconsider how they better utilize the space to optimize their operations.

Hotels are renovating the space too

Hotels also update the service and space in responding to the shifts of customer base and demands. Some hotels, for example, added more local flavors into their designs. It also becomes essential for hoteliers to make a space “Instagram-ready” when more travelers rely on technology in travel planning.

Other hotels incorporate the healthy living concept into its service offered. Recently, Hilton introduced the in-room fitness concept, allowing travelers to do exercises inside the newly renovated Hilton guestroom in select locations. Westin also has a similar program called The WestinWORKOUT room.

What are the essentials for restaurant designs and hotel designs? What are your suggestions?

Growing up, I would always go to McDonald's and play in the play pen either by myself or with friends. I've seen McDonald's change over the years and each time it's changed I get pretty shocked. The company started off with two brothers opening a fast food restaurant and by someone coming in and franchising the company it's become the global success that we see today. This fast food restaurant keeps updating their looks to look more modern. They also have self service when ordering your meals, which has cut the jobs of many people because they are no longer needed to take orders. This McDonald's in Chicago looks not only like an Apple Store but a five star restaurant. The fast food chain has turned their flagship into a very nice looking restaurant that will attract clients from all over. The chain is also planning on renovating their other restaurants and it's going to be interesting to see what the new modern McDonald's looks like.

Embodying the finest luxury experience, The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, LLC has been established since 1983. In 1998, Marriott International purchased the brand offering it more opportunity for growth while being independently owned and operated. They are known for their enhanced service level as the motto states, “Ladies and Gentlemen serving Ladies and Gentlemen”. The luxury brand now carries 97 hotels and resorts internationally and is attempting to keep the aspects of luxury while keeping up with the trends of the technologically improving generations. The Varying Demographics of the Target Market The Ritz-Carlton’s typical target market includes: business executives, corporate, leisure travelers, typically middle-aged persons and elders, and families from the upper and upper-middle class section of society .   This infers a large range of types of travelers in which all are similar in that they are not opposed to spending extra for the luxurious ambiance. However, w...

How to Convince AI that You Are the Best Candidate for the Job

Last week, we discussed how more companies used AI to screen resumes and analyze job candidates’ performance in the initial interviews. We called for companies’ attention to the  potential AI biases in hiring . This week, we will visit what job candidates can do to help AI pick us and recommend us for hiring. A. Writing a Resume Tailored to AI Screening First and foremost, job candidates must thoroughly research the job and the company to understand its job descriptions and organizational culture. From there, they can: Write the resume in Word and submit it as a Word document instead of a PDF file. Select a straightforward format and avoid using graphics, charts, or complex layouts that could confuse AI. Use headings effectively to help AI pick up the content it seeks, such as “Relevant Job Experience” and “Education.” Strategically pick the relevant keywords that match the job descriptions as the job candidates describe what they perform(ed) at work. Highlight their achievements a...

What Shall We Do When Job Seekers Cheat the AI Hiring Systems?

AI can streamline the hiring process, but concerns linger. For example, AI could perpetuate gender or racial biases in the hiring process , just like most human HR managers could do. Meanwhile, to increase the chances of being picked by AI, job candidates must prepare resumes and job interviews tailored to AI’s “preference.” When more job candidates understand how to convince AI that they are the best candidates for the job , can AI still make valid recommendations to hire the best-fit candidate in the pool? Then, if AI makes a mix of valid and invalid recommendations for hiring, will HR managers find it more challenging to select the right candidate for the job? The situation can get even more complicated if a candidate cheats the AI hiring systems. Cheat to bypass AI screening: Is it the cruelty of human nature? Job candidates are eager to get hired. Career coaches want to help. That is a good thing. Nevertheless, I have seen many free online tutorial videos teaching job candidate...
